Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground turkey

- 1 medium onion (diced)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice (jasmine or basmati)
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup chicken broth (or water)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese (optional, for topping)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
Step 2: Brown the Turkey & Onions
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground turkey and cook for about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon until browned.
- Add diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté for another 3 minutes until softened.
- Stir in oregano, paprika, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper for extra flavor.
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread half of the chopped cabbage evenly in the bottom of the dish.
- Sprinkle uncooked rice over the cabbage layer.
- Add the cooked turkey mixture on top, spreading it evenly.
- Pour diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and chicken broth over the casserole, ensuring everything is coated.
- Top with the remaining cabbage.
Step 4: Bake the Casserole
- Cover the dish tightly with foil to trap moisture.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the rice and cabbage are tender.
Step 5: Add Cheese & Serve
- (Optional) Remove the foil and sprinkle shredded cheese on top. Bake uncovered for an additional 5-10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Storage & Reheating Tips:
- Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Freeze: Freeze for up to 3 months (wrap tightly in plastic + foil).
- Reheat: Warm in a 350°F oven for 15-20 minutes, or microwave in short bursts with a splash of broth.
Notes
- Best Rice Choice: Long-grain rice (jasmine or basmati) works best. If using brown rice, increase baking time by 10-15 minutes and add extra broth.
- Make it Vegetarian: Replace ground turkey with chopped mushrooms, lentils, or plant-based meat.
- Extra Flavor Boost: Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or balsamic vinegar to the tomato mixture for depth.
- Spice Level: Add red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper for a little heat.
